Blogging Experimient…

April 20, 2007

I’m experimenting with hosting my blog on my own domain.  It’s living at http://www.deannaspencer.com/blog

I’ve been trying to come up with an easy way to get rid of the nofollow tag.  So far I’ve added the follow plugin, but I don’t know how to remove the nofollow tag without screwing up my blog.  So for right now it’s staying as is until I can think of something else.

My apologies to the LinkedIn Bloggers Group for my late post.  I'm in the middle of a move, so things are kind of hectic for me right now.  The Blog for this week is Des Walsh's Thinking Home Business.  It's a great blog for entrepreneurs as well as anyone that wants to learn more about blogging.  This is another example of a wonderful blog.  It has a clear title and an about me page that explains exactly what the blog is about.  Great job Des!

This week's LinkedIn Bloggers Blog Boost is Corporate Blogging 101.  It's main objective is to explain blogging to corporate types.  The particular post that I am supposed to be reviewing today is found here:

He brings up a very good point.  This was a very well written post.  I knew exactly what he was trying to get across and what I as a reader was supposed to get from reading his post.  The title of his blog is simple and it's easy to understand what he's going to be writing about in his blog.  Great job!

Since I keep talking about blog descriptions so much, I felt like I should give some tips on writing one.  First off it really doesn't have to be that long.  It should only be about two or three paragraphs.  You should explain the main topics that you write about.  You should also point out what you hope your reader will learn or gain from reading your blog.  This will help the reader understand your motives better.  It will also help to separate your blog from spam blogs or splogs since most of the splogs that I have seen don't take the time to do all of that stuff.  Also if it is a business blog, please leave out stuff about your cat and your significant other when you describe your blog.  Most business readers really don't care about all of that stuff.  That sort of information is more appropriate in a personal blog.  Keep in mind that potential employers or clients could be reading this blog and you want to always present a professional image.  I hope this helps with your blog descriptions.  Good luck and happy bloggging!

This week's Blog is Practical Blogging. Robyn covers business and tech topics.  Some topics include social networking, blogging, advertising, podcasting and pr.  I like the colors and the fact that she has a picture on her blog and a link to her linkedin profile so you can learn more about her.  These things help me feel confident that I am not reading a splog (which is a spam blog, but that's another post).  Great blog Robyn.

I'm hoping to turn this into an article, but I'm just posting my ideas here.  One thing that I do is to put a link to my profile on the
various networking platforms that I use on my sidebar.  I also leave insightful comments on the blogs of people that I am connected to,
just to let them know that I was there.  Another thing that I do to use
my blog in my networking efforts is to add the person's blog to my blogroll.

If the person is an expert in something that is small business related,
I like to use their reprint articles in my blog.
What are some ways that you use your blog in your networking efforts?  Leave the answer in the comment section.

Blog Break

February 16, 2006

I haven’t disappeared or anything.  I’m just taking a blog break.  I just had my midterms last week for my paralegal classes that I am taking at Kaplan University (online, I love it).  I am really tired and every time I try to think of something intelligent to say or write, my brain goes, nope I don’t think so.  So I’m giving my brain a few days off.  I’ll be back on track by Monday.  I just thought I’d let you guys know.  Have a good weekend.

Efficient Blogging

By Jim Estill

One of the challenges of blogging is to come up with good posts that interest readers and keep them coming back. Sometimes I do not feel like I have good original wisdom. It is presumptuous to think I can have top quality original material all the time.

A second challenge is the time to blog. I run a $1 Billion dollar company so when I decided to blog I knew I needed to figure out how to do it efficiently. My blog is mostly about efficiency and time management; these are topics I study.

These two challenges can be solved with a simple concept. Copy.

Ideas to use when copying are:

1 – attribution. Give the credit together with the link to the original author.

2 – look for something you can add to. Blogs can be synergistic. Take a concept or part of a blog post and expend on it and give your opinions, insights or views. In many cases, this can start a flow of ideas that are enriched from the original post.

3 – You can use either the whole post or most usually just part of it and point people to the original.

4 – I usually ask for permission which has never been denied. After all copying helps the original author and garners them some readership. And of course never copy copywritten material without permission (and most blogs are not copy written).

5 – The simplest place to find material to use to copy is by blog surfing although this can mean a lot of irrelevant material to filter. One source of free articles sorted by topic is www.isnare.com.

6 – In many cases the person you copy from will point a link back to you since it is flattering to them. Charles Caleb Colton said “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” (one trick on quotes is to look them up on www.brainyquote.com). These links to you can increase your traffic.

In summary, copying saves time and increases the quality of material on your site. It can even lead to traffic since in many cases you will get link backs from the original site.
