1. Use voicemail to your advantage.
If you’re in the throes of mapping out your business strategy and the phone rings, do you pick it up? If so, break the habit right now. Voicemail exists for your convenience. If you don’t answer the phone, the person will leave a message. Call them back when you’re in a better frame of mind for productive conversation.
2. Assure your colleagues that you WILL get back to them.
If you get many hangups calls, your voicemail probably isn’t doing the job it’s supposed to. In your outgoing message, state your name and company name in a bright and professional tone, and instruct the caller to Leave a Detailed Message. Do the same with your email autoresponse, and reassure your prospects that you will respond to their inquiry in a timely fashion.
3. Designate phone time.
Give your colleagues and prospects windows of time in which they can reach you. Set aside specific time slots for your phone calls. Clarify via email what the nature of the call will be, and then envision in your mind how the talk will go and the points you plan to bring up.
4. Keep client call time to a minimum.
You will encounter many people in this lifetime who LOVE to talk. Yes, they may be great people with great advice. But if the call is dragging on endlessly, or what’s being discussed has no relevance to the work you’re doing together, you must get them to shut up. Of course, be tactful as possible… make your key points and wrap it up. In extreme cases, a white lie may be necessary: “Sorry, I have another call scheduled. Let’s resume this discussion on email.”
5. Limit your use of Instant Messenger.
While Instant Messaging programs can be handy for a back-and-forth discussion, they can also do a great job of breaking your concentration and your stride. If you’ve set your mind to a task, shut off Instant Messenger. The idea is to be in control of your time, instead of letting others control it for you.
6. Designate email check and response time.
Type, type, type. “You’ve got mail.” Type, type type. “You’ve got mail.” Yes, email can eat away at your precious minutes hours, days weeks… if you let it. The solution: don’t let it! Email is like TV commercials; it interrupts your regularly scheduled program. Set aside specific hours of the day in which you send and reply to email. Keep your email program off for the rest of the time.
7. Claim your territory.
If you work in an office with other people, you probably know that guy – the Interrupter. Sure, he may be bringing up some great points (or he may not), but he’s another one who’s stealing your time. Ways to discourage him: Shut your door. Remove empty chairs from your office, so folks won’t be tempted to take a seat and start gabbing. Maintain “closed” body language, i.e. if interrupted, do not turn your body from the task in focus. Or you can simply say, “I have a deadline. Let’s plan to talk at around 4.”
Keeping interruptions and distractions to a minimum is every business owner’s greatest challenge. The best way to take control of your time is to align yourself with your mission and stay focused!

Working From Home — Examining Your ‘Why’

As Work at Home Moms, we talk about our “Why” as a positive
thing. Our “Why” is our purpose, our reason, our muse. We refer
to our ‘Why’ when we need inspiration or motivation to reach
outside our comfort zone, to try a little harder, to keep going
even when it’s hard. Our ‘Why’ helps us to succeed.
Today I was asking “Why work from home” in a slightly different
tone. Today, I am home with a sick puppy and am up to my
eyeballs in puppy puke.
I’m new to this puppy thing. I was warned up and down about how
much work a puppy is, and I thought “I have two children. How
hard can a puppy possibly be?!” Well, one difference is that
newborn babies aren’t born with fangs — at least mine weren’t.
So, in between changing the gauze patches on my shredded arms
(those teeth are sharp!), and hours of puppy school, I fell in
love with this furry beast. He was added to my list of “Why’s”.
So, today, while I was composing my work at home mom
newsletter, in the background I hear my furr-ball start to
vomit — again. The thought that ran through my mind initially
was not a happy “Why”. It was more like:
* “WHY in the world am I home to deal with this while my
husband gets to sit in a quiet office all day?”
* “WHY isn’t HE dealing with cleaning up the 8th pile of yucky
stuff?”
* “WHY don’t I get any peace and quiet while I work?!”
After I cleaned up the puppy, rubbed his head and got him clean
blankets, threw in another load of laundry, and climbed into bed
with my sick 7 year old and my 3 year old to read stories, I had
time to collect my thoughts. A little bit (ok, a LOT) of puppy
puke was sure worth it.
And, later, when I made my phone call to my husband to tell him
about our day, it wasn’t the puppy-puke I was telling him
about….
I told him how our daughter said that she wanted to plant some
jelly beans to grow a jelly bean tree. And, how the kids were
playing the game of Life and I overheard their rules. They
decided that the person who got the most parents into the car
won. That’s why I stay at home.
And, if a furry little tail starts wagging when I walk into the
room? Well, that’s sure an added bonus.
So, the next time your warm and loving “Why” turns into a plea
for help, take a deep breath and think of all the memories you
would be missing — both good and not-so-good, if you weren’t a
work at home mom.

Article writing is one of the best ways to increase your
traffic and get more sales. You’ve heard it a million times so
you decide to finally just do it. You write an article and
submit it to the article directories, eagerly anticipating the
flow of traffic. Instead you receive the dreaded rejection
letter.
What did you do wrong?
1. Did you proof-read your article before you submitted it?
Popular article directory sites receive hundreds of submissions
each day. It’s much easier for the owner to click “decline” than
to edit your typo-filled or unformatted article. Before
submitting, proof the article and proof it again. If grammar
and spelling make you sweat, then hire a Copywriter or ask a
friend to help you before you click that submit button.
2. Is it an Advertisement or an Article?
Article directory sites are looking for informative, useful
content, not press releases or ads. If your submission reads
like an ad, it will not be accepted. And, think about it –
even if was approved on a fluke, do you think that website
owners will be clamoring to publish your 500 word
advertisement? Not a chance.
If your goal is to write and submit a press release, then check
out places like prweb.com.
3. Did you read the Submission Guidelines?
Each article directory has a different culture. Glance through
the Submission Guidelines before setting up an account to make
sure your article will be welcome before you submit it. If an
article directory is based around a niche like gardening, then
please resist the urge to submit your Mesothelioma articles.
There are plenty of article directories that want your
articles. It’s not an effective use of your time to submit
unwanted articles to a niche site.
4. Is your article PG-rated?
Don’t submit sex-related articles, profanity, or general
nastiness. Article directories are businesses and, therefore,
exist to make money. This means they generally receive income
through affiliate sales or advertising. So, if your article
includes sex or contains words stronger than “darn”, don’t be
surprised if your article is rejected. Of course, if your
article contains nastiness or anything illegal — don’t even
bother.
5. Is your Article original and written by you?
Submit only original articles. Please do not copy someone
else’s article, edit it, and submit it. That’s stealing and you
will be caught. And, do not submit articles from shared content
sites. Article directories want original, unique content.
Public domain is ‘public’ but think how ineffective article
directories would become if there were 500 versions of the same
public domain piece. Instead of wasting your time figuring out
how to reinvent other people’s content, just write your own.
Now that you know what not to do, start writing the kind of
articles that article directories dream of — and watch your
business grow.

Why You Want to Create An Ad Tracker
This is how you create an advertisement tracker. You want to do this so you know in general how much traffic an advertisement or article or any other web traffic idea created. You will be able to capture how many hits/clicks each ad generated. This will give you a per click cost. The lower the per click cost, the more effective the ad.
For example if you placed one ad on ABC web site for $20.00 and you got 100 hits, that would be a per click cost of .20 cents per click. If you placed a $20.00 ad on XYZ web site and you got 50 clicks, would be a per click cost of .40 cents per click, a higher per click cost. That might tell you that you might want to spend more money on ads in ABC web site. You may decide not to advertise on XYZ web site again.
Another thing you should do is EVERY time you place a new ad on ABC web site set up a tracker for it so you can see if the number of clicks is decreasing or increasing. You could also base that on an increasing or decreasing cost per click.
You should be able to set up a fairly simple Excel spreadsheet to track all of your ads.I would suggest at minimum the following columns:Date of Ad, Where placed, # of hits/clicks, $Spent, Cost/hit
You should set up ad trackers for every ad, including off-line print or magazine ads. If you post in forums, you should set up one for all the forums.Since Magnetic Sponsoring is the first thing I will be heavily advertising, I will be setting up trackers for that.
Make sure if you do forum posts to set up one for that, because, remember that may generate web traffic.
Overview of the Process of Creating An Ad Tracker
To break the ad tracking down when someone actually clicks on your link in an ad or forum post or wherever, it looks like this. I am going to use my web site name for this example.
I created a special page tailored to real estate agents where I wanted to drive traffic. The link for that page is:http://www.yousendthecards.com/yousendthecards/id21.html
I use a software package called EasyTracker to track my hits. In EasyTracker, I created a “tracker” link. This is the one I publish for ads. You can use a “redirector” like tinyurl or make up a shorter link that will redirect to this on. That link looks like:http://mywaytofreedom.com/cgi-bin/mpacks/ad.cgi?RealEstateEZ1(I have my tracking software on another web site, but you can keep it all on one web site.)
So when they click on that link it will take them to the EasyTracker link. The counter counts each hit. It then redirects them from the instructions we have set up for tracking this ad back to the real estate web page:http://www.yousendthecards.com/yousendthecards/id21.html
